Thank you again for your recent enquiry.

You have a Copeland coffee set which appears to be complete comprising Coffee Pot, Milk jug, Sugar Box, 6 coffee cups, 6 saucers and a tray.

The service is made of Spode Imperial earthenware and the pattern is printed in brown and hand coloured over.

The original pattern dates back to the 1830s when it was known as ‘British Flowers’.

Subsequently the border from this pattern has been used for many patterns over the decades, some with different designs in the centre and some with just the border.  It was printed in different colours and sometimes the prints were coloured over in polychrome enamels.   Each version of the pattern would have a different pattern number and sometimes a name, but not always.

Your service has a good selection of painted, printed and impressed factory marks:

  • There is a hand painted pattern number applied in red, 2/3275, indicating that it was first introduced into the pattern books c.1890.
  • There is a printed mark in brown (the same colour in which the pattern is printed): “COPELANDS EARTHENWARE Rd. No. 159276 ENGLAND. This refers to the shape of the items, the spiral fluting.  This shape was registered on 20 October 1890 and is called ‘Charlotte’ shape.
  • There is another printed mark in the shape of a boat – I can see that this is printed in brown on one item but in black on another. This mark does not relate to the pattern or design of the object on which it is found.  The boat has the words ‘COPELAND LATE SPODE’ above and Rd.No. 180288 ENGLAND beneath.  The number refers to the registration of the style of the boat trade mark which was registered on 11th September 1894.  It occurs on earthenwares from 1894 to 1910.
  • There is an impressed mark ‘Spode Impl.’ Spode Imperial is an ivory coloured earthenware in use c.1890.

Therefore, your earthenware coffee service is decorated with pattern number 2/3275, c. 1890-1910.

This pattern was produced for a long period
