This stunning collections of 112 Andy WARHOL portraits - two variations each of 56 people - is published in conjunction with a major exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Celebrated in the sixties for his Pop paintings of Campbell's soup cans, film stars and disasters, WARHOL has found equal renown in the seventies with his commissioned portraiture. Here, in glorious color, are Andy's remarkable interpretations of his friends: collectors, art dealers and the Beautiful People. Among those included are Diane von Furstenberg, Halston, Mick Jagger, Brooke Hayward, Liza Minelli, Carolina Herrera and Yves St. Laurent.

The introductory essay by Robert Rosenblum, one of America's most distinguished art historians, places WARHOL's work in the context of traditional portrait painting. In translating "the journalistic medium of photography into the realm of art", WARHOL revised this traditional at a time when it had been largely abandoned by most serious artists. His use of the mechanized look of commercial photography grants WARHOL a new "aesthetic language" and an utterly contemporary style that paradoxically preserves its subject for prosperity.

WARHOL, as Rosenblum remarks, is a celebrity among celebrities, the "ideal court painter to the 1970s international aristocracy". Individually these portraits capture the complex personalities of their subjects; together they capture the look of society in this decade.

Brooke HAYWARD, at once ravishingly worldly and devastatingly innocent; Carolina HERRERA, a queen tigress among tigerwomen.... Or take the portraits of Ivan and Marilynn Karp. Even if we don't know that Ivan , the art dealer, thinks, moves, and talks faster and clearer than most of us mortals, WARHOL has told us all by fixing a momentarily steady gaze, in synch with the cool puff o cigar, amid a nervous flutter of brushwork that first dissolves the hand and then leaves centrifugal traces of wriggling, linear energy at the edges of hair, shoulder, lapel. As for his wife, Marilynn, a counterpersonality is instantly indicated by WARHOL's revival, so frequent in these portraits of Picasso's use of a profile on a frontal view to evoke an external - internal dialogue with the more concealed recesses of psychology.
